FILMMAKER TACKLES THE PUBLISHING WORLD BY RELEASING HER FIRST SELF-PUBLISHED FICTION NOVEL

MICKEY DEYMON

This creative and visually-inspired woman is making her name known throughout the East Coast from the gritty streets of New York City all the way down to the southern lifestyle in Tampa, Florida. She has accomplished several tasks in the entertainment industry and now is has empowered herself to take on the publishing world and become an exciting, and in her words ‘geek’ author with her adventurous take with her first-ever novel. Oh, and she’s a vegetarian in her personal life and a lead boss in her professional life. How does she do it all? We had the pleasure to speak with her during a break between her extensive schedule.

Congratulations on becoming an author and publishing your first book ‘Detarru Island: The Gates Of Hell’.  What are you allowed to tell us about the book?

My first Novel Detarru Island is about a young boy (Erick) who sacrifices everything to save the world. On his prolonged journey through Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise he learns that taking Evil Satu down was all part of his destiny. The story takes you on an awesome journey filled with adventures and lots of action. You will meet new characters along the way and witness how they find the hero within themselves to save all worlds from Demon destruction.

“Always take your passion seriously”

Can you tell us what made you write the book?

I loved reading books as a young girl and really enjoyed them as much as I did watching movies. The only big problem back then was, that I always finished these books within a day or two and these adventures never lasted for me. So one day when I was fifteen years old, I took upon myself to write my own story, which to me would finally last forever. I just didn’t have a clue on how to do that. I decided to practice my free writing skills that I had in my English class back in high school. Soon after I started writing, I ended up with twenty-five-page long story in my notebook. But it still wasn’t enough for me. Since I didn’t know the professional writing format, I decided to do some research. It wasn’t until the year 2011 when I finally learned and adapted the real writing skills from other famous authors, which I later applied to my own writing. After I finished writing it in 2012, I felt really accomplished with my work and started working on revisions soon after.

The book’s Genre is Adventure Fiction and my experience developing this story was super amazing. I enjoyed every character in my story and also felt such a deep connection with them. It was like as if I knew them for a years. Besides feeling accomplished and happy, I also I felt a bit sad because I wasn’t writing about these characters anymore.  After doing more research and trying to find some guidance on how to edit the book and publish it, I finally had the privilege to self-publish on June 19th 2018.

This book is very inspirational and it can be read by all audiences. The book teaches you to be courageous and to never give up when life gets tough no matter what. Ultimately, this book can help many who are going through tough times in life.. My dream for this book, is to be able to make it into a motion picture one day.

What process and techniques do you use to write your stories and for your characters? What has been the most challenging parts for you?

One technic I used, was telling the story through the main character’s perspective. He would tell you how he feels, what he’s thinking, the way he views his own world. It’s like you are witnessing his journey right through his own eyes. He also has this unique way of describing other characters he comes across in the story once in a while, which sometimes comes off as very comedic, but at the same time you’d want to know more about them. The more you read, the more fun and interesting it gets.

What do you personally put into your writing and what impact does it have on you?

I would secretly apply some of my own personalities to some of these characters in the story, especially Erick. This made it a lot easier to relate and be able to work on their character’s development.

What obstacles did you face as an author and what do you do to overcome and achieve your goals?

When I first finished writing my Novel, there was nothing in the world I wanted but to be able to share with my friends and family. So I would send to my friends to read to get some feedback about it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really getting much support and interest then. I was also struggling to find an editor and the money to be able to publish the book as well.  I wasn’t getting much guidance from other authors and no one would share much information. Editors I was coming across were also too expensive for me to afford. Towards the end of winter last year, I was able to save up the right amount of money to pay a few freelancers to work on my book.

What advice would you give young female writers about the industry and achieving their dreams?

The advice I would give young females and young male writers about the industry is that sometimes doing your own research really does help when no one else will. Sometimes it’s hard when people don’t want to guide you on the right path, either because of selfish reasons or simply because they don’t even know themselves. But, the more knowledge you gain about the industry and reading about other successful writers, the more knowledgeable you’ll be. This understanding of the industry will definitely help you advance further in life.

If you could name a few authors that you feel your style and tone could be compared to, who would they be and why?

I would say R.L Stine and DJ MacHale are my favorite authors who inspired me to write my own novel and who I can compare my work to because I really love their writing styles. Keeps the readers entertained from beginning to end and they are really great stories.

Do you have any upcoming books that audiences should keep a look out for?

At the moment I only have Detarru Island as my first Novel on Amazon and Barnes and Noble [links below at end of article]. However, the story does not end there. So keep a look out for Detarru Island (The Angel of Death).

Oh we are so excited for Detarru Island (The Angel Of Death)! Until then, what else do you do in the industry besides being an author?

Besides an author and script writer, I am also a film director and an actress.

Wow, Congratulations for being such a dynamo female in the field. What have you been able to accomplish so far in your multi-faceted career?

After my third project called ‘El Exorcismo de Anna’ which I filmed in the year 2013, my cast and I were interviewed at a known Latin Network called ‘Telemundo 47’ where I had the pleasure to speak about my project and be able to promote it. Soon after in the year 2015, I filmed ‘ROBIN (Teaser film)’ and Short Film ‘DUO’ in 2016.  Both films were accepted to many film festivals, they were also nominated and ‘DOU’ got a special mentions award in the year 2017.  Since then, I have been learning and gaining more experience working with other professionals.

Besides your profession, what can you tell us about yourself?

I am a TCI [Technical Career Institutes] College Honors graduate who pursued her career in Networking Technology with an Associate’s Degree. Although that is my bread and butter today, my passion really lies in the writing and film-making industry. Ever since my brother Jhovanny gifted me with a digital camera back when I was fifteen years old, I never stopped recording funny videos and events in my life. The thought of catching life memories for ever fascinated me. So in the year 2010, when I was still trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life, I found a video camera in my sister Dorivee’s room. I decided to record a short clip out of boredom and later posted on Facebook for friends and family to see. Soon after I posted this clip, all my friends were asking me to make it into a movie. I later wrote an eight page script for the first time and filmed my first short thriller called ‘The Hunting in Field Court’. That’s when I finally found my true passion and what I was destined to do.

Any secret tips you could give to us that we all can benefit from?

Always, always take your passion seriously, keep up with other professionals and perfect your craft, never burn bridges, never waste people’s time and always stay humble.

Anyone you would like to thank at this time?

I would like to thank my parents and my family and close friends for always believing in me and my talents. My social media fans and supporters who have been following me from day one; for never giving up on me and encouraging me to keep working hard whenever I would feel down. I also would like to thank Chase Michael Pallante for giving me an opportunity to be interviewed with News In Entertainment and to also allow me to work with him as a First Assistant Director in the Award-winning film ‘MATURING YOUTH’ from RNF. Since then I have gained so many new skills and experience in the industry and because of this, I have become a better film director/script writer. Thank you for always being a friend.
